Getevallei and Streek-GR Haspengouw are Walking Routes of the Year

What will be the successor to the Pajottenland Walking Network? The long awaited answer to this question was revealed today at the ‘Fiets en Wandelbeurs’ in Antwerp Expo. The jury declared both the 'Getevallei Walking Network' as the ‘Streek-GR Haspengouw’ (Local Great Route Haspengouw) to be Walking Routes of the Year.

Trophy

The five walking projects on the shortlist are located in the Gaume, the Oostkantons, the Hageland, Haspengouw and the Meetjesland. "A varied offering of high quality that made choosing the winner extra difficult for us,” the jury said. "To such an extent that after about 720 kilometres of walking trails and many hours in meetings, we still came up with a tie between two of the nominations for the trophy."

Walking Network Getevallei

The first winner is the Getevallei Walking Network, a project of the province Flemish-Brabant in co-operation with Regional Landscape Zuid-Hageland. "250 km of pathways/trails have been carefully selected and well signposted. Poles of attraction are the historic township of Zoutleeuw and the provincial domain Het Vinne. The accompanying intersection maps has been exceptionally well made and helps guarantee smooth progress," according to the jury report.

Streek-GR Haspengouw

With Streek-GR Haspengouw we find ourselves in the fruitiest part of Belgium. ‘Grote Routepaden’- Great Route Trails- and the Regional Landscape Haspengouw & Voeren developed a 180 km long pathway through many changing landscapes, castle domains, character villages and orchards. "Well chosen, tranquil pathways and excellent signposting. Ideal for long distance walkers."
