Van Gogh route is Cycle Route of the Year 2016

The Van Gogh cycle route in the Dutch province of North-Brabant has been declared European Cycle Route of the Year 2016.

This unique cycle route, an impressive 335 kilometres in length, not only enables cyclists to appreciate Van Gogh but also to enjoy the glorious Brabant countryside.

Nominations

In addition to the Van Gogh route, there were three other nominations in the race for the title Cycle Route of the Year: La Vélofrancette (France), Herzroute (Switzerland) and cycle network Wallonia Picardy (Belgium).

Van Gogh theme

The jury was very much taken by the 'Vincent van Gogh' theme, among other things. “The route takes you to diverse areas of North-Brabant, where the legendary artist lived and worked. At various places, the landscape retains the appearance which Van Gogh put on canvas,” according to the jury report.

Alpe Adria

The Van Gogh cycle route is successor to the Alpe Adria Radweg, which was awarded the trophy in 2015. By sponsoring this competition the ‘Fiets en Wandelbeurs” hopes to stimulate cycling at home and abroad and encourage authorities to develop attractive cycle routes.
