‘Waas- en Reynaertland’ declared ‘best walking route’ of 2020

The regional big route ‘Streek-GR Waas- en Reynaertland’ around the Waasland and associated with Reynard the Fox of fable fame, was declared ‘best walking’ route of 2020, on the opening day of the Fiets en Wandelbeurs in Ghent, in the contest to find the ‘best walking route’ in the Benelux.

The border-crossing route emerged as winner from a shortlist of three. The two other candidates were the Gilbert van Schoonbeke trail (Antwerpen - Veenendaal) and the New Water Line trail in the Netherlands.

The regional big route Streek-GR runs all the way from Lokeren in the province of East-Flanders via Beveren and Sint-Niklaas to Hulst in the Dutch province of Zeeland. After 20 years, the route has been completely renewed and expanded, with special attention for passing through many new nature areas. The route has not only grown by 73 km in length, the trajectory between Lokeren en Temse is also completely new. And the remainder of the old route has been radically redrawn.

Jury report

The Belgian-Dutch jury came to their conclusion after walking all of the routes on the shortlist themselves. According to the jury’s report it was the extra trump cards which won it for the route, like the well documented and attractive ‘topo-gids’ guide which describes the path in both directions, and the clear yellow-red signposting. Another plus point for the jury was the entire new section between Lokeren and Temse and the references to the fables of ‘Reynaert de Vos’ or Reynard the Fox from the 13th. Century.

The Walking Route of the Year is an initiative of the Fiets en Wandelbeurs, which aims to stimulate the laying of qualitatively good routes. The jury consists of: Gilbert Roels (chairman), Christina Bloem, Wanda Catsman and Isabelle Franssen.
